Share your knowledge

Last Sunday, the sermon at the church we attend encouraged us to share our knowledge. It occurred to me that I have learned quite a lot over the last few years, but maybe I haven’t shared it much. Here and there, yes; to specific people from time to time, yes; but not in any organised fashion.

So I have decided to share my knowledge.

I have to start by saying that it is more a matter of belief and conviction and thoughts than objective facts. But perhaps that’s how it has to be when it comes to faith. There are objective facts, but then there is almost always the application of those facts and their varying interpretations before you arrive at a conviction or belief.

So I will be sharing my “knowledge”, understood as what I have come to believe based on teaching from various sources (I will cite those sources) and, of course, based on what we can read in the Bible.

Here are some of the areas I hope to cover:

  • Why did Jesus come to earth?
  • Did the Father desert the Son on the cross?
  • Is the Bible “inerrant” and what does that mean?
  • Is the Bible the ultimate and only authority for the way we Jesus-followers are to live our lives?
  • What does it mean to be saved? From what?
  • Who, in the end, will be saved?

Some of these will inevitably break down into subsections which may turn out to merit a post of their own. I won’t know for sure until I write them.

These posts will describe my beliefs at this time – some of them tentative, and some quite definite. You may find that they are not what you were taught (assuming you have been taught at all) and, indeed, they are probably not what I was taught either. However, they do have a basis in the documented beliefs and practice of the early church and the early church Fathers – beliefs and practices which have relatively recently been replaced by what are now considered to be orthodox or conservative evangelical beliefs.

I’ll end with that caveat and I hope you will join me over the next few posts in exploring my “knowledge”.

I’ll try to make it interesting and useful, and hope to challenge you to think for yourselves about these topics which we so often just take as a given.

PS: if you want to suggest topics or questions, I’m open to tackling at least some of those.
